Fred Taylor

7 December 2008

Even QB David Garrard and RBs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew deserve to be looked at closely. About the only person that has been reliable all year is Kicker Josh Scobee.

They must establish the run. There's no reason why an offensive line with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew flanking them cannot have at least an above average running game. Rather than the 17th ranked attack in the NFL (out of 32 teams).

The running game has been spotty, but steadily improving. With RBs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew splitting time flanking QB David Garrard, one has to think the offensive line is as much responsible with the way the running game goes as the running backs are. If no other question has been answered, it does seem that Garrard is a mainstay as a quality starting QB in the league. The defense seems to be a "bend-but-not-break" type unit, often giving up touchdowns that look easy early in a game, but somehow coming up with enough key stops to make the game winnable in the end. Kicker Josh Scobee is as good as it gets in the NFL it seems, and the rest of the special teams have been adequate.

But the running game was also stagnant again: RB Fred Taylor carried ten times for 19 yards. And on defense, the secondary was shredded again (this time by a much better quarterback), with Mathis's interception being the exception rather than the rule.

aguars in the game during the first half.

Meanwhile, the Jags found their ground game (both Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for over 100 yards) and David Garrard finally looked like the QB he was last year, completing 16 of 22 passes but without a touchdown. The Jax receiving corps has yet to impress (with Jerry Porter already banged up and Dennis Northcutt leaving the game with an injury) as RB Jones-Drew caught the most passes for the most yards on a variety of screens. At one point, the Jags drove the ball 82 yards in 12:18, draining most of the fourth quarter and finishing it with 3 points by Scobee.

preseason!), 5th round pick Trae Williams (DB) and WR D'Juan Woods.

In more dramatic news, Fred Taylor (RB) was arrested early this morning for an incident outside of a club in Miami, though it does not seem to be something that will have much of an affect on the season.

According to the Jaguars' official website, Fred Taylor said they were "out-physicalled" against the Dolphins. Never mind the grammar; his point was evident on the field.

Garrard, in the first year of not really having to earn his starting spot, is coming off a year in which he completed 64% of his passes, threw for eighteen touchdowns with only three interceptions. I remember the first pick he threw; it was week 13 in Indianapolis in a 28-25 loss. There aren't too many whose names aren't Brady or Manning who wouldn't be thrilled with Garrard's numbers from last year, and
