What? A life coach? What exactly is a life coach you may be asking...well, simply put, a life coach is a person that is ALWAYS in the corner of the player whether they win or loose; on and off the field. You see, these players are thrust into a whole new environment called "the NFL" and they come from all walks of life. Who can they really trust in this business? Their agent? Their coach? The real answer is maybe they can trust all of those people or entities, however they still need that trusting ear that can share personal one on one time with them to help them accomplish goals and move to that next step/level in their career and even in their personal life.
Coaching is a rarely new profession. It actually was found and formulated through sports..."sports coaching." The transformation from college to the NFL is often overwhelming to players, however they are expected to handle it no matter what their background. Some handle it better than others, thus affording them a long career in the NFL...seven years or so. So what's next? Well, who knows...that is up to the player that more than likely will need some assistance in this transition as well. Coming out of the NFL into "the real world" can be overwhelming as well and a lot of players just need some suggestions or some help getting to that next level.
I have for years since I came to Jacksonville and fell in love with the Jaguars, seen all of the transitions (some not so good) the individual players have gone through. I often thought...if only I could have spoken to that player maybe I could have saved him some grief. I've often asked, "Who is talking to these players?" Is anyone concerned about the players who are obviously struggling with this transformational process of being thrust into the NFL. Exciting? Yes...but complicated as well!
I look forward to the upcoming communication on this topic so stay tuned...signing out for now...Ms. Dee
